What we collect and why

• Email address and login credentials, to create and secure your account — needed to perform our contract with you.
• Username and the recipes, photos, ratings and notes you share, to run the cooking club and show your posts to other members — contract performance.
• Support messages you send us, so we can help you — contract performance and our legitimate interest in good service.
• Device, IP address and basic usage information, to keep the app running, prevent fraud and improve it — our legitimate interests.
• Membership status and order references from our payment provider, to unlock member features — contract performance and legal obligations such as tax records.

Payments and who we share data with

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders and handles payment, billing, tax compliance, invoicing, subscription management and returns. When you buy a membership, your name, email address, billing details and payment data are collected and processed by Paddle under Paddle’s privacy notice. We never see or store your full card details; we receive only your membership status and order references.

We also share data with:

• Service providers who host the app, store images and send our emails.
• Professional advisers such as our accountants and lawyers, where needed.
• Authorities, where we are required to by law.

Some of these providers are outside the UK and EEA. Where that happens we rely on adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses to protect your data.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data for as long as your account is open and for up to 12 months after you close it, in case you come back or we need to resolve a dispute. Order and tax records are kept for 7 years because the law requires it. After that we delete or anonymise your information.

What other people see

Your username is public. Your email address is never shown. Recipe versions and comments you post are visible to other logged-in members.

Storage and security

We use secure cloud services to host Butter. We take reasonable steps to protect your data, but no service is 100% secure.

Cookies

We only use essential cookies to keep you logged in. We do not use tracking cookies for advertising.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to our use of your data, to portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. We respond within one month. If you’re unhappy you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, or your local supervisory authority.

You can update or delete your account at any time from your account page, or email us at contact@butterapp.co.uk to request a full export or deletion of your data.
